The short version

Bethel Park is a home rule borough about 7 miles south of Pittsburgh1. Our directory lists 93 places to eat and drink inside its boundary, 4th among municipalities outside the city, spread over 11.7 square miles23.

40% of listings are independent and 56 are chains2. The leading categories are Pizza (11), coffee and cafes (10), sandwiches and delis (9) and bakeries (6), so this is a good town for an ordinary weekday lunch or coffee.

Library Road and the mall

Library Road has 30 listings, the most of any street in town. South Hills Village, the two level mall that serves as Bethel Park's shopping center, has 17, and South Park Road has 1421. Library Road follows the Silver Line, so many of these places are a short walk from a station.

A trolley suburb that kept its trolleys

The area was settled around 1800, became Bethel Township in 1886 and was incorporated as a borough on March 17, 19491. It is named after Bethel Presbyterian Church, whose origins go back to 1776 services held by John McMillan1.

The Pittsburgh Railways interurbans arrived in the early 1900s and made Bethel Park an early streetcar suburb. Most of the region's streetcars were dropped in the 1950s and 1960s, but the lines through Bethel Park stayed and were rebuilt as light rail in the 1980s1.

One more local first: on March 11, 1927, the first armored car robbery in the United States took place here, when the Flathead gang dynamited a road to steal a mining payroll headed for the Coverdale Mine1. That mine, opened around 1920, ran under part of the borough, and the state indicates that all of Bethel Park was undermined1. The highest point is Rocky Ridge, at 1,370 feet, in the southwest of the borough1.

Parks and groceries

South Park, one of the large county parks, sits on Bethel Park's eastern side4. Supermarkets here include Giant Eagle #0004, Giant Eagle / Market District South Hills #14, and Shop 'n Save4. The Bethel Park Public Library is the local library.

Bethel Park borders Castle Shannon, Whitehall, Baldwin, South Park, Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon and Peters Township in Washington County1.

Who lives in Bethel Park

A day on the Silver Line

Bethel Park is one of the few suburbs where a car free food day works. Library Road, with 30 listings, follows the light rail, and South Hills Village sits at the end of the Blue and Red lines21. You can ride in, eat at the mall end, and walk or ride a few stops to coffee on Library Road.

Our directory has 2 Bethel Park listings with a patio, and 10 with a full bar2. Next door, Mt. Lebanon's Washington Road and Castle Shannon's stations are on the same rail system, so a South Hills trip can cover three towns.
