The story
Morris "Moe" Walsh was orphaned at 10 and raised on a farm in Bethel Park. He learned to bake at Dudt's Bakery in Mt. Lebanon and served in the Navy during the Korean War. In 1955 he and his fiancee Anna opened Bethel Bakery with $2,500, in three attached garages on South Park Road with parking for two cars.
In 1958 they moved to Brightwood Road, where the bakery still is. The decorated cakes made the name, and the scratch made French buttercream became a South Hills obsession.
Their son John and his wife Chris took over in 1991 and came through a fire in November 1992. On July 1, 2023, Moe's grandson Stephen and his wife Kate became the owners, the third generation of Walshes to keep the ovens going.
