Pittsburgh classic
The story
Pennsylvania Macaroni Company goes back to 1902, when three brothers from Trabia, Sicily, Augustino, Salvatore and Michael Sunseri, started making pasta. A devastating fire nearly ended it. They rebuilt, and as they did, they filled the shelves with olive oil, spices, specialty foods and cheese.
In the late 1940s Augustino's sons Robert and Salvatore took over, and the Sunseris have run it ever since. In 2025 Bill Sunseri took the lead after his brothers David and Rick retired.
Today Penn Mac carries more than 5,000 specialty products. For generations of Pittsburgh cooks, it's where you go in the Strip when you want the real thing, and the family behind the counter still has the same name on the door.
