Pittsburgh classic

The story

In the early 1980s Jim "Big Tree" Trebac toured the East Coast, eating his way through sub shops in Philadelphia and up and down the Jersey Shore. In 1983 he came home and opened Peppi's in Allegheny West. The secret, he figured, was the bread, so he built every sandwich on Mancini's.

In 2004 the Steelers drafted Ben Roethlisberger, and Peppi's answered with the Roethlisburger, sandwich number 7. It became a North Side legend, a sandwich as loaded as a Sunday at the stadium.

Peppi's still runs on fresh bread and big sandwiches, in Allegheny West and on Penn Avenue in the Strip.

The original is Peppi's, 927 Western Avenue in Allegheny West.
