Pittsburgh classic
The story
Raphael Moio came to America from Calabria in 1913 and cooked in hotels before he opened his own pastry shop in 1935 on Larimer Avenue in East Liberty, the heart of Pittsburgh's Little Italy back then.
His son joined him after World War II, and in 1972 the shop moved out to the Monroeville Mall Annex. Tony Moio became the owner at just 19, after losing both of his parents in 1976 and 1977. In 1991 he moved the shop to Route 22, near the Turnpike, where it still is. His daughter Lisa is the fourth generation in the business.
People come from all over the eastern suburbs for the sfogliatelle, the rum cakes and the cannoli.
