The short version

Monroeville is a home rule municipality about 10 miles east of Pittsburgh, with mixed residential and commercial development1. Our directory lists 132 places to eat and drink inside its boundary, which ranks 2nd among the 129 municipalities outside the city23.

It is also big: 19.72 square miles, so only about 7 listings per square mile3. Plan to drive between stops. 44% of listings are independent and 74 are chains2.

One highway does most of the work

Monroeville's food is concentrated along William Penn Highway, which our data records under two spellings: 24 listings on “William Penn Highway” and 22 on “Wm Penn Highway”2. Here's why. When the Parkway East was extended to the Turnpike, U.S. 22 was moved onto it, and the old stretch of William Penn Highway became Business 22, which today is the main business district1. Mall Circle Drive, around the mall, adds 15 more2.

Pizza is the largest category with 16 listings, then sandwiches and delis (13), burgers (11) and coffee and cafes (8)2.

Mall, labs and zombies

Monroeville is named for Joel Monroe, the first postmaster. The area was incorporated as Patton Township in 1849, became the borough of Monroeville in 1951, and adopted a home rule charter in 19741.

Beyond food, there's the Monroeville Mall, several office parks and high rise hotels dating from the 1960s, and the Monroeville Convention Center, formerly the ExpoMart1. U.S. Steel's research laboratory here employed nearly 1,800 people at its 1979 peak1.

The mall is also famous on screen. George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead put its survivors inside Monroeville Mall, which inspired the My Chemical Romance song “Early Sunsets Over Monroeville”, and Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a Porno was filmed at the mall and the municipal building1.

Groceries and the outdoors

There's a wide range of food stores here: Giant Eagle, Giant Eagle #60, Gordon Food Service, Leonard Labriola's Italian Market, Patel Brothers, Sam's Club #6677, and Shop 'n Save #02121004. It is one of the few places in the county where an Indian grocery and an Italian market sit in the same list. Check before you go, since the inventory is several years old. The county farmers market list includes Monroeville FM5.

Boyce Park is the county park on Monroeville's side of the line4. There's also the Westmoreland Heritage Trail, a rail trail that links Monroeville to Trafford and Murrysville1. The Monroeville Public Library is listed in the county inventory4.

That makes it the county's eastern gate. If the highway strip is not what you want, the older Turtle Creek Valley towns are a few minutes downhill, and each has its own guide on this site.
