Pittsburgh classic
The story
Giovanni Mineo was a baker in Sicily before he came to Pittsburgh in 1954. Riding a streetcar down Murray Avenue, he found a spot to rent at 2130 Murray, and on September 13, 1958 he introduced pizza to what was then a mostly Jewish Squirrel Hill.
In the 1970s he moved next door to 2128, and his teenage sons Dominic and John started working beside him. The menu grew to homemade pasta, hoagies and white pizza, and in 1994 the brothers opened a second shop in Mt. Lebanon. Giovanni died in 1996. His sons held on to his recipes, opened a bar in Squirrel Hill in 2014, and now the third generation is making pies too.
Mineo's even ships frozen pies overnight, and come football season they head out to Steelers fans all over the country.
