The story
Giuseppe "Joe" Aiello sailed from Palermo, Sicily, in 1967 with $13 in his pocket. He spent years kneading dough and simmering sauce for someone else before he opened Aiello's on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill on April 5, 1978.
From day one he was at work hours before the doors opened, making fresh dough, and that dough is still the heart of the Aiello taste, under a thick red homemade sauce and plenty of melted cheese. Aiello's sits just down the block from Mineo's, and the friendly rivalry between the two has been a Squirrel Hill conversation for decades.
Today Joe's daughter Cathy and her husband Travis carry on his work, and Aiello's is still very much a neighborhood favorite.
