The short version
Shadyside is an East End neighborhood whose name comes from a 19th-century Pennsylvania Railroad station that was named for its shady lanes1. Our directory counts 86 places to eat and drink there, seventh among the neighborhoods we track2.
If you want coffee, start here. Coffee and cafes are the largest category at 19 listings, more than double the next category, bars and pubs (7)2. After that come Japanese and sushi (7), sandwiches and delis (6) and a spread of Japanese, Mediterranean, Mexican and breakfast spots. Shadyside has a higher share of national brands than its neighbors: 57% of listings are independent.
Three corridors within walking distance
Shadyside's businesses are spread across three corridors, Walnut Street, Ellsworth Avenue and South Highland Avenue, all within walking distance of each other1. In our directory the biggest cluster is actually on Centre Avenue (23 listings), followed by Walnut Street (17), Ellsworth Avenue (10) and Highland Avenue (6)2.
Walnut Street mixes national chains with local businesses; Pamela's Diner there served President Obama and 80 veterans at a 2009 Memorial Day breakfast1. Ellsworth Avenue is described as mostly small, locally owned businesses, and South Highland Avenue as design stores, restaurants and cafes1.
Ellsworth Avenue also has one of Pittsburgh's gay friendly bars, and the entrance to East Liberty's Eastside retail complex is on South Highland Avenue1. That is why a few places people think of as Shadyside sit on the East Liberty side of the line, and the reverse.
Events on Walnut Street
Two recurring events are documented on Walnut Street. The Jam on Walnut is a summer concert series held on the last Saturday of each summer month at Bellefonte and Walnut, and the Shadyside Arts Festival, now called the Art Festival on Walnut Street, is a juried late summer street fair1. Dates change every year, so check the organizers' own announcements before planning a visit around either.
Shadyside was annexed to Pittsburgh in 18681. Since the 1920s it has been home to a mix of families, young professionals, artists, students and apartment dwellers, with Victorian houses alongside modern apartments. Its compact layout means most houses have no garage1.
Who lives here
Shadyside had 15,317 residents in 2020, up from 13,915 in 2010 (+10%)3. About 46% of residents are between 25 and 44 and about 82% of adults 25 and over have at least a bachelor's degree. About 72% of occupied homes are rented4.
About 21% of working residents take transit to work, one of the higher shares on this site, and 13% walk4. At about 5.6 listings per 1,000 residents, Shadyside's restaurants mostly serve the people who live nearby23.
The Shadyside Action Coalition, a neighborhood group formed in 1973, says its focus is safety, planning and zoning, parking and preserving the neighborhood's character1.
UPMC Shadyside hospital is in the neighborhood, and Chatham University sits just over the southern edge in Squirrel Hill1. The neighborhood also has several schools, including The Liberty School, Winchester Thurston's city campus and The Ellis School1.
Parks, art and steps
Green space is limited inside the boundary: the city's datasets list 1 playground here (Mellon Playground), and Mellon Park, home of the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, sits just across the line51. The public art inventory includes “Forbes Road Monument”, “Shadyside Art Intersection”, and “Five Factors”6. Shadyside is one of the flatter East End neighborhoods, with 2 short sets of city steps7.
For bigger parks, Frick and Schenley are a short bus ride south, and the Squirrel Hill and East Liberty guides cover what is near them.
