The short version
Robinson Township is about 12 miles west of Pittsburgh. It's a retail hub for the region, home to Robinson Town Centre, Settlers Ridge and the Mall at Robinson1. Our directory lists 101 places to eat and drink here, 3rd among municipalities outside the city23.
Robinson has only 15,503 residents, so it has about 6.5 listings per 1,000 people, more than any of the other big suburbs in this series24. Most of its diners drive in. 38% of listings are independent; 63 are chains2.
Three shopping roads
Steubenville Pike is the main line, with 32 listings. Robinson Centre Drive has 18 and Settlers Ridge Center Drive has 122. Expect national chains, big parking lots and a few independents on the older stretches of Steubenville Pike.
By category, Bars and pubs (9) and pizza (9) lead, ahead of sandwiches and delis (9) and American (7)2.
Four old villages and a drive in
Robinson grew out of at least four former communities: Groveton, near the Ohio River; Forest Grove, around Montour High School; Gayly, around Settlers Ridge and the mall; and Moon Run, which it shares with Kennedy Township1. Robinson also completely surrounds the small borough of Pennsbury Village1.
The Twin Hi-Way Drive in stood on Route 60, on the original Lincoln Highway, and took its name from the old U.S. 22/U.S. 30 designation. It closed after 1996, reopened in 2007 with a second screen added later, and did not reopen in 20161. Bayer USA is also based in the township1.
Groceries and parks
Grocery stores here include Costco #332, Giant Eagle #47 / Market District Robinson, and Gordon Food Service Store in Robinson5. The county farmers market list includes Robinson FM6. Settlers Cabin Park, a county park, is listed in the inventory for Robinson5, and the Robinson Township Library is the local library.
Robinson borders the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Fairywood, Kennedy Township, Thornburg, Rosslyn Farms, Carnegie, Collier, North Fayette, Moon and Coraopolis1. That makes it an easy combination with a meal in Carnegie or Coraopolis. Across the back channel of the Ohio River, Robinson also faces Neville Township1.
Who lives in Robinson
Robinson grew from 13,354 residents in 2010 to 15,503 in 2020 (+16%)47. The median household income is near $103,048, and the median age is 40.5; about 34% of homes are rented and 46% of adults hold a bachelor's degree8. The township is served by the Montour School District1.
Planning a Robinson meal
The commercial strip does not stop at the township line. The Pointe at North Fayette, next door, is a stretch of retail plazas, big box stores and hotels adjacent to Robinson Town Centre, the Mall at Robinson and Settlers Ridge1, so it helps to treat the two towns as one shopping district.
The practical advice is simple. Pick a road before you pick a restaurant: Steubenville Pike, Robinson Centre Drive and Settlers Ridge Center Drive are separate clusters with separate parking, and crossing between them means getting back in the car. Robinson has 1 listing with a patio in our data and 12 with a full bar2. For something more walkable, Carnegie's main street is one border away.
Then and now
In 2000, Robinson had 12,289 people, a median age of 40 and a median household income of $55,263, not adjusted for inflation1. It had 15,503 residents in 2020, with a median age of 40.5 and a median household income near $103,04848. Growth of +16% since 2010 is among the fastest of the big suburbs in this series47.
