The story
Wigle Whiskey is a family affair. Meredith Meyer Grelli, her husband Alex, her parents Mark and Mary Ellen Meyer and her brother Eric opened it in the Strip District in March 2012, the first distillery operating in the city since Prohibition.
To get there, the family pushed for a new state law in late 2011 that lets small distilleries sell straight to customers. Their copper still was built in Germany. They named the place for Philip Wigle, a Whiskey Rebellion figure who was convicted of treason and pardoned by George Washington.
Wigle now makes more than 150 products and buys about 500,000 pounds of organic grain a year, more than anyone in the region. There's a restaurant at the Strip distillery and outposts at Ross Park Mall and Pittsburgh International Airport.
