Pittsburgh classic

The story

Vincent Chianese was a tailor by training. He learned to make pizza from his uncle in San Francisco, then came home and opened Vincent's Pizza Park in the early 1950s.

What he built was the Vinnie pie: huge, thick, gloriously greasy and buried under a pile of shredded pepperoni, served on cardboard covered with paper. Generations of families from the eastern suburbs have made the drive for one.

Vincent died in 2010, and the shop closed in 2012 amid disputes. Longtime customers were heartbroken until June 17, 2013, when it reopened with his daughter Toni Zollner in charge and Dave Miller, who learned under Vincent himself, making the pies. The recipe came back, and so did the crowds.
