The story
Potomac Bakery has been on Potomac Avenue in Dormont since 1927, when Lillian Tate's parents, German immigrants, started it. In 1954 they convinced Lillian and her husband Reg to join the family business.
Reg had met Lillian at Northwestern, where he played on a football scholarship, and he served in the Marines. But the bakery became his life. For more than 70 years he was the welcoming face behind the counter, often sending people home with a box of sweets. He died in May 2026 at 96.
Their son Bob went on to run the bakery, and the family name is still on the cakes, cookies and pastries Dormont grew up on.
