Pittsburgh classic
The story
Helen Mannarino grew up in Poland helping out in her family's restaurant, and in 1974 she came to McKees Rocks. On June 5, 1991 she opened Pierogies Plus in a renovated gas station on Island Avenue, starting with just 350 square feet.
The pierogies did the talking. By 2006 the shop had expanded to more than 3,000 square feet. The women pinching dough in the kitchen come from Poland, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, and everything is made by hand the old country way.
Food Network found it for Food Finds in 2003, and Bobby Flay came by for Food Nation in 2004. For a lot of Pittsburgh families, a holiday without a box from Pierogies Plus just doesn't feel right.
