Pittsburgh classic
The story
Beer has been brewed on this North Side hillside since the 1840s. The Eberhardt and Ober families made lager here, their brewery joined Pittsburgh Brewing in 1899, and the kettles kept going until 1952.
Then came Tom Pastorius. He launched Penn Pilsner in 1986, brewed under contract at first, and in 1989 he started brewing at the old E&O site, with a restaurant called the Allegheny Brewery & Pub that later took the Penn Brewery name. It was the first brewery with its own restaurant in Pennsylvania since Prohibition.
The old lagering caves are still under the brewery. Up top you'll find wurst, schnitzel and pierogi, a biergarten and German style beers brewed right on site.
