Pittsburgh classic

The story

Mike & Tony's got its start on the South Side in the early 1970s, bragging about the freshest lamb in town. Founder George Takis named it after his sons, Mike and Tony. In 1983 his cousins, the Makripodis family, took it over.

George Makripodis came over from Greece at 17, and the Georgie Mak burger is named for him. He and his wife Mary still run the business with their daughter Helen Makripodis Devlin and her siblings. Helen grew up standing on a milk crate to ring up orders.

The gyros are still the reason to go, and the original South Side shop on Carson Street is still takeout only. The newer shop in Ross even moved into the old Kretzler's Tavern.

The original is Mike & Tony's Gyros, 1414 Carson Street in South Side Flats.
