The story
Max's Allegheny Tavern fills two old Deutschtown hotels. George Rahn bought the Farmers & Drovers Hotel in 1900 and built the Hotel Rahn right next door in 1903. The tin ceilings and tile floors are still there, and the hand carved bar came from the St. Louis Exposition.
The tavern opened in 1977 as Max and Erma's Allegheny Tavern, then shortened its name so nobody would mix it up with the Ohio chain. The Diegelman family has owned it for more than two decades.
The menu is hearty German food, the kind of place where a plate of sausages and a cold beer feel like the right call, and the old hotel bones make it one of the North Side's most atmospheric rooms.
